Google won a bankruptcy auction on August 14, 2026 to acquire a de-identified internal corporate dataset from Spirit Airlines for USD 10 million, for use in product development and AI model training. A US bankruptcy judge was scheduled to review the sale on August 19, 2026.
What happened
- Google's USD 10 million bid outbid a USD 7.5 million offer from Mercor, an AI data company.
- The dataset includes approximately 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, spreadsheets, calendars, marketing, HR, project management, financial databases, audits and presentations, plus 30 million lines of code and 7.5 billion transactions.
- Google stated the data will be scrubbed of personally identifiable information and customer records by a third party before transfer.
- Spirit Airlines ceased operations in May 2026 after a government rescue package collapsed, and had filed for bankruptcy a second time in August 2025 following losses of nearly USD 257 million.
- Spirit selected Google as the winning bidder on Friday, August 14, 2026, with a court approval hearing set for August 19, 2026.
